Endless Summer Hydrangea

May 28, 2015

Uncle Joy gave me a wilted Endless Summer Hydrangea last year. I think he gave up on it. I thought it was going to die but I took it home and kept watering it anyways. Winter came and it looked completely dead. However I just went ahead and cut it all the way to the bottom but left a tiny branch that seem to have one or two bubs on it.

Lace Cap Hydrangeas

Lace Cap Hydrangea

This lace cap hydrangea in the corner was gifted to me from Suzanna about 3 or 4 years ago. Similar to the reddish brown leaves hydrangea, this one appears to be growing slowly. I lazily sprinkled some slow release fertilizer right on top of the plant but read that the fertilizer must be mix into the soil.

Update: February 28th, 2015 - This morning I mixed slow release fertilizer with potting soil and added them to the base area surrounding the hydrangeas.

Edulis Superba Peony - Spring 2015 - LEFT 2

The Edulis Superba Peony did so well this year! Roughly about 10-11 blooms. This peony type have no fragrance.

I cut some of the Peonies from L2.

Peonies - Spring 2015 - RIGHT 1

February 26 2015 - PEONY R1

March 30th, 2015

PEONY R1 - I was very disappointed in this plant. Last year it was the biggest peony bush and had the most blubs. In addition, it had more than 20's eyes in fall and winter. But I think moving it to the right side of the walkway where it received less sunlight might have irritated the plant. So I did not get much blooms this year.

Itoh Peony Kopper Kettle

Feb 26, 2015
This is an Intersectional Peony, Itoh Peony Kopper Kettle. My got it for me from Costco of last summer but all the flowers were gone. It just had leaves. I accidentally cut off the leaves in October and it caused this peony to sprout more leaves in autumn instead of spring. BIG MISTAKE! Never do that again. Luckily it didn't cause all the eyes to bloom. So I might get some flowers this year.

As of today, it's getting a tiny bit of direct sunlight (the left side fence blocks half of the sideyard) touching the edge of it. So maybe that's why it's starting to sprout compare to some of the other peonies. About 2pm the sun is covering the entire Itoh plant. Yay!

One single bud.

April 3rd, 2015

First spring with this plant and I only got 1 bloom.

Snowball Viburnum

Date Taken: March 10, 2015
I forgot how old this plant but I think this is its second spring with me. I keep thinking that it was dead last month since there was no sign of greenery but it's starting to sprout some leaves. That's why it's important for me to document these things.

The small snowball viburnum is about knee high and had lots of tiny deadwood from the previous year. I went ahead and trim those dead branches off and detangled the branches a bit since it was growing a bit strange. Since we moved it to a new location we added fertilizer and soil to the viburnum.

Preziosa Pink Beauty Hydrangea

May 21, 2014
This is my pink hydrangea located left of the Sister Teresa Hydrangea. Beautiful healthy plant that was noticeably smaller than Teresa but was promising.

February 26, 2015
Early spring the pink hydrangea leaves are a lot smaller and developing much slower than Teresa. The leaves are a bit reddish brown around the edges and the branches are quite fragile. They say it's normal for the preziosa variety to turn reddish brown like that.

Sister Theresa Hydrangea

This image was taken on May 21, 2014.
Sister Theresa Hydrangea was purchased at Lowe's next to my work place. It was huge and I was super excited to purchase this plant and bring it home. It didn't have any flowers when I first bought it, but after a month or so the blooms were huge and so beautiful.

February 26, 2015
This morning I added additional potting soil and mixed it with a slow release fertilized to the base surrounding the hydrangea. When I moved the rocks around the hydrangea to add the new mixture, I noticed there was a lot of worms around the base, which verified why this hydrangea was doing great compare to my other ones. The soil must be really rich therefore helping this plant to thrive. Hopefully the new mixture will help it grow bigger this year. I trimmed the dead wood down to the first bulb that bloomed and removed a few short dead branches.

May 28, 2015

This plant is doing great. However, since it doesn't get much sun the blooms are taking a long time to bloom...very very VERY slowly.

Royal Star Magnolia

Just planted this guy on February 22, 2015. It's about waist high. Currently in February and the fence's shadow is shading the plant. Hopefully it can still bloom.

Houki Tree Peony

Should look like this:

Feb 26, 2015
Just bought this guy for $22.99 at Green Acres. Will transplant it to the ground once it's bigger and I can figure where to place it in my small backyard.

Peonies - Spring 2015 - LEFT 3rd

There are roughly five peonies (that's not including the Itoh and tree peony) in my small backyard. I only took a few pictures because they look about the same. This one is located on the right side (where the fence's shadow is currently covering the plants during the spring). This is my biggest root system out of the five peonies. Recently I added soil and slow release fertilizer on all five peonies. We covered them with some mulch for the past two days due to frost.

Recently I had to make the hole bigger on this one because new eyes were growing under the tarp. It seems some little bugs have been eating some of the eyes. But it looks ok and I think it will bloom. This one is along the wall of the house, in the area that will get sun during spring. About 2pm the sun is covering half of that side.

PEONY L3

PEONY L3 - No blooms even though there was a few eyes on this bush. It might be because I planted it too deep, although I still saw the eyes at ground level. I will replant it in fall and see if that will help it grow better.

Hydrangeas Double Delights

Hydrangeas do especially well when fertilizers are effectively used in spring or early summer. Source

Spring 2015

This one was growing in a pot for the past 2 years. Replaced a dead hydrangea with this one in it's place. It is developing really well but might be because it was getting really good morning sun next to the pomegranate tree. Now that I moved it to the right of the big hydrangea, hopefully it will be ok.

March 30th, 2015

May 28th, 2015

This hydrangea finally bloomed (after 3 years) and to my excitement, it turned out to be a "Double Delight" hydrangea. Yes, I did not know what I have. So far there are 4 blooms on this plant.

I love the beautiful blue and each bloom is about 3 inch in diameter (which is relatively small). But since it's the first year this plant is in the ground, hopefully next year it will be much bigger.

Peonies April-May 2012

Felix Crousse peony, spanish lavendar, and dusty miller.

Bowl of Beauty

Edulis Superba Peony

In 2012 the peonies was planted against this area. Not good. Did not get enough sun to produce much flowers. Removed them and put roses instead. For some reason the rose trees worked good in this area. Probably because it's taller and could get the remaining drop of sunlight in the evening.
